Happy new hair

I'll honestly admit to my blondorexia. I went light, lighter, lightest over the weekend and chopped off a good 10 centimeters. Not that radical at all but if you're used to having really long locks for most of your life you get attached and every millimeter that goes missing is kinda scary. Long haired ladies back me up on this one ;) Excuse the grainy pictures, I just couldn't wait to give you guys an idea of what it turned out like. Anyway, it feels good, fun and fresh. New chapter in life, new haircut. Let's go!

Current hairspiration

Totally feeling the modern boho vibe the hair in these shots are having. While flipping through the March issue of ELLE UK (which is usually the first title I devour from my weekend reading stack) I came across this beautiful shoot that also happened to feature a perfect messy cut and natural color. Not too sure if this is achievable without hair gurus bristling every lock in place for six hours, but I guess I'll find out soon because I'm off to the hair dresser in an hour. Shorter and blonder, let's go!

Hair how to: how I do my top bun

AW3yrL on Make A Gif, Animated Gifs

Whenever I'm working (or just doing MTV marathons. Or an attempt at actual marathons) it's of absolute importance that my hair is out of my face. I feel like I can think more freely without long blonde locks constantly getting the way of my view. So when I posted an outfit with me sporting my high bun last Friday (here), I got quite a lot of comments, e-mails and instagram questions (on this top bun pic) on how I did it.

So here's a little tutorial of the easiest do ever: the messy top bun. Simply pull all your hair up, twist it one way (twist tight for a smaller and less messy bun) and secure with a hair band. And what's your go to hair style when you're up to some serious business?

Code red

Playing around with make-up can be such a pointless yet satisfying way to spend a few hours on a Saturday. I'm testing out a new deep shade of red I picked up this week (M.A.C's Russian red to be exact). Snow has taken over the town and I guess I'll be stuck inside for most of the weekend which I secretly don't mind that much. Cold and darkness are easier to deal with from a warm, cozy apartment filled with new magazines, huge knit jumpers and hot chocolate anyway.

My easy winged eyeliner tutorial

My black eyeliner is pretty much tattooed on by now; it has been my go to make-up look for years. I usually go for a subtle black line that's flicked out at the end but certainly don't fear a heavy sixties liner either. Applying eyeliner has now become as easy as putting on mascara to me, but I know some of you find it challenging to get that perfect wing. After I showed you this picture, I got a lot of requests to do a how to and of course I was up for it. So I present you: my fool proof tutorial on how to create a perfect retro eyeliner in 4 simple steps. Hope it works for you!

Ear piercing number four

A few days ago I decisively walked in to a little traditional pierce shop to get my third ear stud redone. It had closed up after getting it last year. (You might have spotted it here and here. Oh, and I have one in my inner ear shell).

I love the idea of teeny tiny silver dots forming a line along the ear. Suddenly I strongly felt like the process of getting there was taking waaay too long and I'm stocked that I got two at once. As you can tell in the last picture it's really subtle. Just as I had in mind. I'm probably going back for a last one in a few months since five is my lucky number (is that a good enough reason?) and I feel like that would balance out nicely. Mom, if you're reading this, I'll try my best to stop at that...

My everyday smokey eye in 8 simple steps

Most of us probably have a signature look when it comes to clothing. A formula of shades and shapes that always works and that you reach four when you want to feel like you or when you don't have time to overthink. I have the same with beauty and often go for a subtle smokey eye. The focus is on the outer corner and the lash line, while the inner corner and 1/3d of your eye will be neutral. Here's how I do it! (For more info on the specific products I use, check out this post)

1) Apply primer. Too Faced Shadow Insurance and Urban Decay Primer Potion are worth every penny.
2) Use a neutral as base color on the moving eyelid. Tan or beige would work. (I like M.A.C's Bisque and Kid and the purplish taupe Tease from the Naked Palette II). This layer of eyeshadow will help blend the colors easier. If you want dark and dramatic, use a gel liner in light brown or even black as base (this doubles as primer!)
3) Go over the upper lash line with a kohl pencil, focussing on the outer corners of the eye. I prefer a dark grey (M.A.C's Showstopper is good) or dark brown pencil over black because it's more smokey and less harsh. You can be messy here, we'll blend later.
4) Trace over that pencil line with dark eyeshadow. I often use a warm dark grey or a cool dark brown.
5) Apply a medium shade on to a fluffy blending brush (I use taupe) and go over the part where the dark color stops, with soft strokes, moving upwards to your crease.
6) Go back in to the the dark color with a smaller brush and apply on the outer v. Blend again. With any access powder that's still on the brush, go in on about 2/3d of your lower lashline.
7) Open up your eyes tremendously with a highlighter in the inner corner. Don't go too sparkly, we still want it to be natural. A matte cream color or a pearly shade work well (I love Bootycall from my Naked Palette II and heard good things about Shroom by M.A.C).
8) Add black mascara. Done!

Current favorite make-up

Changing my make-up routine about once every decade doesn't stop me from hoarding beauty products. O no, quite the opposite! I fear for my life whenever I open my beauty cabinets because I've stacked my shelves with millimeter precision to make everything fit in. Swiping my fingers over a pigmented, velvety eyeshadow, the first spray of a tempting perfume and laughing out loud about O.P.I.'s color names... it just feels so good. And single handedly boosting the recession is quite a selfless thing, if you really think about it...

Make-up I use most right now:
1) Carine Roitfeld for M.A.C palette (in desert camouflage). Being able to afford anything Carine wears was out of the question until this perfect M.A.C palette came out. With a dash of black, taupe and gold you're almost as cool, French and subtly smokey eyed as Miss Roitfeld herself. Almost.

2) M.A.C studio sculpt camouflage (in NC20). Subtly dab on spots and the under eye area before applying foundation. I find that you'll use less foundation since most is already evened out and covered. And that's good; we still want to see natural skin texture.

3) M.A.C frost eyeshadow (in cranberry). Red eyeshadow is said to make you look ill, but all I know is that when placed in the outer v it gives great warmth to a brown smokey look.

4) Essie nailpolish (in penny talk). Talk that talk! People have claimed that lipstick is recession proof but did you know nowadays nail polish sales work as recession predictor? In that case, penny talk couldn't be a more fitting name.

5) Urban decay primer potion. Armed with this and my Too Faced shadow insurance no creasy eyelids will ever befall me.

6) Maxfactor Colour x-pert liner (in deep black). Black is best when deep, dark and super intense. The extremely thin brush allows me to set a precise and barely there liner in the blink of an eye.

7) Clinique chubby stick (in curvy candy). Lip balm was never more fun to apply. And no, you don't have to sharpen this stick.

8) L'Oréal eyeshadow (in stellar blue). It's a chrome-y silver that, when placed on the inner corner or the middle of the moving eyelid opens op a smokey eye tremendously.

9) O.P.I. nailpolish (in german-icure). A dramatic, frosty, grape red from the Germany collection that makes your hands total attention grabbers. Literally.

10) M.A.C studio fix fluid foundation (in NC15). Yes I'm that pale! After individual space rockets, a cure for hiccups and a time machine, could scientists of the world please come together to invent more very, very light foundations with a yellow undertone? Thanks.

 11) Maybelline color tattoo (in permanent taupe). Ideal as eyeshadow base and pretty on it's own, simply dabbed on to the lid with a finger.

12) Topshop lipstick (in innocent). Let's get naked! This good nude doesn't erase the lip, it gives you an evened out, cool toned pink that works for any occasion.

13) Topshop lipstick (in idol). Go easy on the eyes when you apply this pale pink. (Unless Nicki Minaj is your style inspiration). What works? A brown mascara with tan eyeshadow / a heavy brow and naked eye / black mascara with a subtle winged out liner.

14) Essie nailpolish (in merino cool). I've assembled about 50 shades of grey - I mean there are massive differences! Some are more purple, some more blue, others are greige - but Merino cool stands out the most.

15) YSL lipstick (in rouge pur couture). A vibrant red lipstick and black lingery. That's all.

To BB or not to BB

To BB or not to BB, that’s the question. Most of you visiting regularly know that besides fashion I’m an admirer and secret hoarder of all things beauty related (some proof here, here and here). By now we’ve probably all heard of BB creams – I don’t think there’s a beauty brand in today’s world that hasn’t marketed one or is working on that yet. It's a phenomenon that took over the Asian beauty world so permanently that it was just a matter of time before it found it’s way to us. I’m always up for something new, so when Nivea (to me a total classic; their hand and face creams have been in my beauty cabinets for ages) sent me their new BB cream in light and medium I decided to give it a try.

Whenever I apply make-up, skin is one of the most important things to me. It’s the canvas, and I feel like you can get away with just a tiny bit of eyeliner and some fresh, rosy cheeks if you have (seemingly!) perfect skin. And O never want anything to be mask like. That’s where a product like BB cream comes in (short for Blemish Balm). It’s a two-in-one product (gotta love the efficiency) because 1) it gives slight coverage – for days on which you don’t need much but want to even out your skin tone and look radiant and 2) it’s said to protect your skin from sun and surroundings and improve your complexion while wearing it with nourishing ingredients. So it’s a day cream and a light foundation rolled up in one, amped up with extra minerals, vitamins and shea butter.

So what has my experience been? I’ve been using it for a few weekends (usually that’s when I tone down my make-up routine a bit and just want to feel and look fresh without any hassle) and really like this already just as a moisturizer. I didn’t need any other moisturizing, even for dry winter days. Coverage was actually quite good, close to some of the foundations I’ve had. Dark circles were touched up with a bit of extra concealer. I should say my skin tone is almost translucent this time of year, so even the light color was slightly dark on me. (And as most BB's in the West, it has an orange undertone where I personally gravitate towards yellow). This would be absolutely perfect for me when it’s summer (when you don’t want much on your face anyway), so now let’s just find a sunny destination to wear it at, right? ;)

Messy sixties ponytail tutorial

I've always adored sixties hair and make up and wear a heavy winged out eyeliner on a daily base. After my every day soft curl tutorial and braided bun how to, it was time for a messy ponytail with sligth nod to that era. I'm by no means an expert, I just love trying out new looks and hope you might learn something or feel inspired. Toni & Guy sent me a bunch of goodies (yummm) from their four different styling lines, that I gave a try. So here it goes!

How to do a messy sixties ponytail:
1) First, for more volume and texture I use a sculpting powder, this one is by Toni & Guy. It makes the hair a bit dryer and texturized, so it has grip and will stay in place better.
2) Run your fingers through your hair for volume and to spread the powder. I do the same to make a messy bedhead.
3) Part your hair. A sixties look asks for a side part!
4) Tease the top quarter of your hair. Don't be too rough, use soft strokes and focus on your scalp. You need to create a big beehive of back-combed hair.
5) Gently brush the top of your teased hair. (You want a wearable nod to the sixties, not Amy Winehouse). Then secure the teased hair with pins that match your hair color.
6) Hair spray is vital! Use one with strong hold that won't make it a crunchy helmet.
7) Curl your ends. This will create a full, bouncy pony tail. Don't deep fry your locks, use a heat protector first!
8) Make a basic ponytail at the nape of your neck. Then pull the ends so it moves up, until it's as high or low as you want.
9) Finishing touch: take a lock of hair, twist it around the hair elastic and pin it at the end. Done!

What I used:

Toni & Guy Casual sculpting powder (I'd highly reccommend this for a messy bedhead look), Extreme hold hairspray, Heat protector mist. And a tiny drop off Shine gloss serum on the ends. You'll find all the products and hair style inspiration you'll find all the products and hair style inspiration here. I also want the Sea salt texturizing spray that's on there, have you tried it?
